Located in the San Rafael Hills, in northeast Los Angeles, Eagle Rock is an ethnically diverse and high-income neighborhood that’s home to Barack Obama’s alma mater, Occidental College, and a community of creative types. Named for a large rock outcropping that resembles an eagle with outstretched wings, Eagle Rock maintains numerous historic and architecturally significant homes (Craftsman, Georgian, Art Deco, Mission Revival, and Streamline Moderne) and was favored by counterculture writers, artists, and filmmakers who moved to the neighborhood in the 1920s. Bordered by Glendale, Highland Park, Glassell Park, Pasadena, and South Pasadena, Eagle Rock is known for its picturesque streets (Hill Drive, in particular), cameos in films such as Reservoir Dogs and 500 Days of Summer, and the cult 60-year-old pizza restaurant, Casa Bianca.
