Known simply as “The Canyon” to its residents, the shallow, flat-bottomed Santa Monica Canyon is home to bohemians, artists, families, and other residents who appreciate the unpretentious attitude of the neighborhood. Lying just north of Santa Monica, the Canyon is known for its rustic beauty, Hollywood history, and architectural gems from Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Craig Ellwood, Ray Kappe, and Moore Ruble Yudell. A huge draw is its schools: Canyon Charter Elementary, Paul Revere Charter Middle School and Magnet Center, and Palisades Charter High School are some of the highest rated in California. Other neighborhood highlights include the ultra-modern Annenberg Community Beach House, open-air Santa Monica stairs for public workouts, and a surprisingly diverse one-block restaurant scene that includes Tex Mex tacos from Marix and high-end Italian at Il Ristorante de Giorgio Baldi, a celebrity favorite.
